Josiah has had quite a couple of weeks.
For a while now, we’ve been wondering when a good time would be to finally take Josiah’s pacifier (or, as he calls it, his num-num) away. Our first inclination was to do it at his 2nd birthday. Unfortunately, that day was shortly after our trip to California and we thought it’d be hard enough to get hmi back on a normal sleeping schedule without taking the num-num away. Of course, after not following through with the first plan, we kept putting the dreaded moment off.
Then, last week when picking Josiah up from daycare, Julianna found that the num-num was missing — no one at the daycare had seen it and it wasn’t in Josiah’s bag. So, that was the day that Josiah would learn how to sleep without his num-num.
Being the quick thinker that she is, Julianna made up a story about the “num-num fairy” and how she needed to take the num-num to a baby who needed it more than Josiah. Josiah was a little hesitant about this, but went along with the story. Julianna also told him that when the fairy takes num-nums, she always leaves a gift behind. Coincidentally, we had just ordered a new tricycle for Josiah and it would arrive at our house any day.
It’s been a week now since the num-num disappeared (which was eventually found at the daycare — but don’t tell Josiah!) and it really wasn’t as hard of a transition as we thought it was. The first couple of nights started with crying at bedtime, but it only lasted about half an hour. Josiah still asks about his num-num once in a while, but when we remind him about his new tricycle, it seems to help.
